An autopsy on the body of actress Brittany Murphy conducted on Monday revealed no evidence of trauma or foul play to her body, Los Angeles County coroner’s office says. However, reported The Wall Street Journal, the agency has “deferred” naming the cause of the actress’s death, pending toxicology reports, which will take four to six weeks. The coroner’s office will also be contacting her physician for a closer look at her medical history, amid reports that the actress was suffering from flu-like symptoms and taking painkillers in the days before her death.
The 32-year old actress, made famous by films such as Clueless and 8 Mile, was pronounced dead on Sunday morning at the Cedar-Sinai Medical Centre, after collapsing in the shower of her her Beverly Hills home. Murphy had complained of shortness of breath and abdominal pains seven to ten days before she was found in cardiac arrest in her bathroom on Sunday. The paramedics reportedly found a number of prescription drugs in Murphy’s bedroom, reported the American celebrity gossip site TMZ; the site also reported that an investigator from the coroner’s office noted that “no alcohol containers, paraphernalia or illegal drugs were discovered” at the scene. TMZ also reported that a “significant amount of vomit” had been found in the actress’s bathroom.
Speculation has been building on celebrity gossip sites that the cause of Murphy’s death is linked to drugs or anorexia. In 2005, Murphy denied rumours that she had an eating order or that her stick-thin appearance was a result of cocaine use. “Just for the record I have never tried it in my entire life, I’ve never even seen it, ” she told Knight Ridder Newspapers, reported The Times. Her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack told Sky News Murphy was suffering from laryngitis before she died; her mother also told paramedics Murphy had Type 2 diabetes, reported The Times.
Gerald Posner, chief investigative reporter for the Daily Beast, also pointed to the possibility that the actress’s allegedly troubled marriage could be linked to her death. Posner said Monjack had asked for an autopsy not to be done on Murphy’s body. “It was interesting to see a man who some saw as the cause of some of her problems being the one who says, by the way, don’t investigate her death,” Posner told CBS’s The Early Show.
Murphy was known for her lead roles in various romantic comedies such as Just Married and Uptown Girls. Her film, Across the Hall, was released in theatres on 4 December; her latest appearance in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables is due for release next year.
