Courtney Love, former frontwoman of the band Hole, has lost custody of her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, American celebrity news site TMZ.com reported today. Frances Bean is the daughter Love had with Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the band Nirvana, who killed himself in 1994.

Joint legal custody of her 17 year-old daughter was given to Cobain’s mother, Wendy O’Connor and Kurt’s sister, Kimberly Dawn Cobain, in a Los Angeles court on Friday 11 December. Love was not present. The court files do not state a reason for the guardianship, reported MSBNC. Geraldine Wyle, the attorney representing O’Connor and Cobain, told CNN that a temporary guardianship was granted and that this was a “private family matter” and The New York Times reported Love’s publicist Alan Nierob also had no further details on the guardianship. TMZ.com states guardianship such as this often take place when parents are incapable of looking after their children and believe this was established for the well-being of Frances Bean.

However, this was not the first time Love has lost custody of Frances Bean. In 2003, she lost temporary custody of the girl after she was arrested for attempting to break into an ex-boyfriend’s home, overdosed on painkillers and made a suicide threat, reported CNN. She regained custody in 2005, but in September of that year she had another brush with the law and was sentenced to 180 days at a drug treatment facility for violating probation on three misdemeanour cases. They included illegal possession of painkillers, being under the influence of a controlled substance in public, assault and battery, reported The New York Times.

Frances Bean told Harper’s Bazaar magazine last year that she understood people’s fascination with her but doesn’t want to live in the shadow of her parents forever. Keith Fink, family friend and Love’s lawyer told TMZ.com, “Courtney wants to say she loves her daughter and she’s the most important thing in her life” and “she knows her grandma will take care of Frances Bean.”

Frances Bean turns 18 and legally becomes an adult next August.
