The Israeli army called for a boycott on Thursday of all products endorsed or advertised by Israeli super model Bar Refaeli, accusing the model of dodging the country’s compulsory military service, reported The Jerusalem Post.
Major General Avi Zamir told students in Herzliya near Tel Aviv, “At the end of the day, she is the one who has to look at herself in the mirror. We, as a society, have an army. If she advertises Fox [clothing], then don’t buy their products. That will be the answer. After all, I can’t take on Bar Refaeli, but you can.” His denunciation of Refaeli is part of a larger campaign to combat draft dodging in Israel, which has become a major concern for the army.
The Daily Telegraph wrote that a third of the eligible population in Israel is estimated to avoid national service.
Bar Refaeli, 24, allegedly evaded military service by marrying a 37-year-old friend. They divorced quickly and Refaeli was seen dating actor Leonardo di Caprio before the year was over, prompting rumours that the marriage had been a sham, reported The Daily Mail. She has further angered her country by applying for non-residential status for tax purposes, reported the Israeli daily Haaretz.
Refaeli’s mother came to her defense yesterday, calling the General “a disgrace” on an Israeli website, reported Vogue. “Before they attack Bar, they should check the government and see who in the government did not join the army.”
