Ricky Gervais, creator of the hit show The Office, denounced Twitter yesterday, calling tweeting an “undignified” activity for adults.
Gervais wrote on his blog that he had tried Twitter for a couple of days but abandonned it because he found it pointless, The Telegraph reported; Gervais added that most celebrities only use Twitter to “show off.”
The New York Times added that Gervais posted his first Tweet mid-December. At the time, he wrote on his website: “The trick is to confidently write banal self-obsessed things and assume the world wants to read them. I’m about to watch Celebrity Big Brother for inspiration.”
On his blog, the British comedian said: “As you may know I’ve stopped with Twitter. I just don’t get it I’m afraid. I’m sure it’s fun as a networking device for teenagers but there’s something a bit undignified about adults using it. Particularly celebrities who seem to be showing off by talking to each other in public.”
After The New York Times reported on his badmouthing Twitter, he wrote: “My aborted twittering made The New York Times. I know I didn’t exactly try very hard but I have bigger fish to fry.”
