Despite strict earthquake safety regulations, in place in Chile since the massive 8.0 earthquake in 1985, new construction was unable to withstand the magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck the country early on the morning of 27 February, leaving more than 700 people dead and infrastructure reeling. The Periscope Post’s Fiona Scott reports from Santiago.
Portal la Dehesa is a newly built shopping centre in one of Santiago’s most affluent areas. The mall was built within the last three years and is home to many upmarket shops and restaurants. But even Portal la Dehesa couldn’t escape destruction during last Saturday’s earthquake.

The shopping mall seems to be another example of the shortcomings of modern architecture in the capital, something that several observers have already begun to point out. As you drive through the streets, it is incredible to see old buildings still standing with little damage, while some of the newer, more modern structures could not withstand the quake.
